Gambling Addiction in the United States

Gambling refers to the act of throwing something away with the intention of winning something in return. When you play a game of chance, you are gambling. Gambling therefore requires three factors to be present: risk, consideration, and money. Gambling can be simple or it can be complicated depending on the game you are playing. You will need to consider a number of factors when you are considering a certain game.

The most serious risk when you are gambling is substance abuse. Many gamblers suffer from some form of addiction and most of these addictions are not physical addictions but rather more of an emotional addiction. Most common addictions include alcoholism, smoking, theft, or other forms of destructive behavior. Gamblers who deal with any form of addiction will be sure to experience some kind of negative impact upon their lives. While some may withdraw from society, others will push the envelope even further by becoming more reckless with their addictions and risking more unfortunate occurrences.

Many addicts who suffer from gambling addictions can no longer control their compulsions. Some may want to gamble because they have something that is lacking in their life. They might have financial difficulties, for instance. They might be lonely, too. Or they may be trying to figure out how to make ends meet. Whatever the reason, a solution needs to be found because gambling addiction destroys everything that is good in life.

It is important to distinguish between gambling addiction and problem gambling behavior. Problem gambling behavior often stems from personal issues. The gambler is struggling and may feel the need to unload and go off on a “berserk” gambling spree. Gambling addicts find themselves unable to stop their problem gambling and so they form addictions. Problem gambling can be solved with professional help, but it is much easier to overcome gambling addiction and learn to live a problem-free life.

Gamblers who are willing to make changes can quit gambling all on their own. There are many methods that are used to stop gambling. One of the most effective is to replace gambling activities with healthier activities. This is especially important when the gambling addict plays bingo or video poker on the internet because there are so many distractions, they soon begin to lose interest in the game and lose even more money.

In some cases, the United States Department of Education will forgive the borrower’s student loan debt after they have graduated. This is often times done with regard to student loans for medical school, law school and other types of professional training. For many gamblers, however, it is not enough simply to get their finances under control. They must also learn how to live a more healthy lifestyle and give up their destructive gambling habits.
